Student Testimonials![]() Emma: CIS graduate and current college student. Graduated high school in 2 years."Participating in the Center for Independent Study for my final three semesters of high school was the best choice I could have made. It gave me more confidence in every aspect of my life, and I still clearly see that improved confidence today. I have done better in college than I would have without the experience. Transitioning from high school to college was almost natural because CIS had already given me the skills that are most important for succeeding in college. I understood juggling class meetings with homework and how to learn outside of class, skills I see most new college students struggling to figure out. Independent Study gave me access to everything I needed to become a better person and student. While in high school, I participated in everything on campus from sports to student government as a regular student. I had more control of my education, which encouraged me to really get involved in it. The help from the teachers was always warm and available, so even though I did the work at home, I knew I had all the support I needed on campus. I can truly say I left high school with a better and more beneficial experience because of the Center for Independent Study." ![]() Lawrence: CIS graduate and concert pianist"The entire program at CIS is a solid, efficient, "no-nonsense" curriculum that both educates and creates a more independent "you." The Center allowed me to attain a great education, and the flexibility I needed to become a successful concert pianist." ![]() Langston: one of the valedictorian speakers, 2008; member and founder of teen "In Black" jazz ensemble that toured Southern California for eight-days, performing and speaking to people about climate change."CIS gave me the freedom I needed to pursue my extracurricular activities like touring Southern California with a band I started, and acting with the Imaginists, while still providing college-prep classes. The teachers are warm and willing to help you do the things you are interested in, and their flexibility is a great asset to any student. CIS is definitely the right place for motivated individuals who want more freedom and more independence for their education." ![]() Kaylah: current CIS student"There are many things I like about the Independent Study program. It has changed my life in so many ways. I am much more interested in learning and getting good grades. I actually like school now, and my parents are very proud of me. I like how you are independent and it is your own responsibility to get your work done. I appreciate that I was able to catch up on my credits because I was so behind. I also like the teachers and how they respect their students. They teach us like the mature young adults that we are, and I look forward to my meetings each week. This program has taught me how to take responsibility for my life, and how important it is to succeed and be the best I can be. It has helped me to understand how important school and learning really are. I know that in order to have a future, I have to do well in school." ![]() Thomas: studies with San Francisco Ballet; current CIS student"The Healdsburg High School Center for Independent Study has enabled me to pursue my dream and passion (professional ballet). It gave me the opportunity to succeed in classes I didn"t feel I could. The staff is awesome and helps you achieve anything you set your mind to. Now, being in college, I realize this program has prepared me so well for the college classroom atmosphere. CIS is not like a regular high school classroom when everything is handed to you. You work your hardest and you actually learn all of the material you are given. I am incredibly happy with my decision to go to CIS. It helped me become the person I am today." ![]() Amanda: current CIS student"Independent Study has helped me because I have one teacher who is there to help me if I need it, but I do all of my things on my own. The schedule and self-organized work time helped me be prepared to go to college where bells do not ring and professors do not call your parents. Also, having the single teacher interaction really helped the learning experience. I was able to develop a trust and fun relationship with the teacher. CIS is the perfect experience to prepare you for after high school." ![]() Ali"I can do the work in the order I choose, at the times best for me and my schedule.
